Eczema Symptoms

A.K.A. - "The itch that rashes"
Itching is the predominant symptom of atopic eczema. Eczema is a hypersensitivity of the skin, with a strong genetic component (immune system) and altered allergenic reaction. Eczema often compromises skin barrier functions, resulting in a high incidence of hand eczema induced by irritant substances (contact dermatitis).
Rashes commonly appear on:
- Face
- Inside elbows
- Behind knees
- On hands and feet
Skin irritation often elicits scratching. Scratching can lead to:
- Redness
- Swelling
- Cracking
- Clear fluid or “oozing”
- Crusting
- Thick skin
- Scaling
Diagnosis is based on symptoms, family history, blood or skin prick tests for IgE levels, and a host of other variables. There is no single test that indicates for eczema. Your dermatologist may ask for the following:
- Your symptoms
- When symptoms occur
- Family history of allergies
- Whether you have conditions such as hay fever or asthma
- Whether you have been around something that might bother the skin
- Sleep problems
- Foods that may lead to skin flares
- Treatments you have had for other skin problems
- Use of medication
